Concept Mouldings receives backing for breakthrough in pedestrian safety

Automotive supplier Concept Mouldings has received financial backing and support from leading agencies in the Midlands to help it promote its revolutionary new safety device for 4x4s and vans

The company has developed new energy absorbing plastic fronts for both types of vehicles which if widely adopted would saves live and serious injuries to vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Concept Mouldings has worked with Accelerate a body which is dedicated to helping companies based in the Midlands compete in the global automotive market and the Business Link Black Country (BLBC).

“Accelerate has been able to provide financial assistance from the Made in the West Midlands Initiative which has helped us to promote our new products at the British International Motor Show, said Concept’s managing director, Ian Finney.

We have worked with Business Link for the last four years who have provided support and financial assistance from the New Opportunities for Business Growth Initiative and will be providing further advice and support following the Motor Show in preparation for launching a European export initiative at the Automechanika trade exhibition being held in Frankfurt, Germany in September 2006,” he added.

The importance of Concept Mouldings breakthrough development of energy absorbing frontal protection systems is underlined by the fact that more than 900 UK and 12,000 European pedestrians and cyclists are killed every year and more than 9,000 and 290,000 respectively are seriously injured by motor vehicles according to recent statistics produced by the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).

Testing of Concept’s revolutionary new plastic frontal protection system has been carried out at MIRA, one of Europe’s leading vehicle design, development and certification centres. The tests showed the frontal protection system reduced the risk of head injuries from over 99 per cent in the worst case down to less than 2 per cent and also substantially reduced the potential for injuries to the upper leg, abdomen and pelvis. Head injuries from the fronts of vehicles are typically incurred by children and these often prove to be fatal. Details of the results and information on this development in pedestrian safety are available on www.frontalprotectionsystems.eu .

The new website shows how Concept Mouldings is already working to an EU testing regime for frontal protection systems which will become compulsory in May 2007 and ensures that the company’s products will always enhance the safety of the vehicle. Further suitable vehicles will be tested and the comparative results will be highlighted on the Frontal Protection System website.

Frontal protection systems developed by Concept Mouldings for different vehicles will all meet the vigorous testing proscribed under the new EU legislation.

The latest testing carried out by MIRA using a prototype product, has been based on typical large 4 x 4 vehicles and vans which are currently available in the UK and the rest of Europe. The tests show how the new frontal protection system works by absorbing energy and protecting pedestrians from hard parts at the front of vehicles such as the bonnet leading edge, radiator and engine.

Details of this new generation of products will also be available on the Concept Mouldings exhibition entrance N1 stand no 244 at the British International Motor Show between the 20th and 30th of July 2006, with special press and trade presentations available on the 18th and 19th of July respectively.
